Crawling in Sacramento?  What's going on here?

On October 1, 2011, come enjoy Sacramento's first annual “Explore History: Sacramento Archives Crawl”. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., nineteen archives and special collections libraries from the Sacramento area and beyond will be celebrating National Archives Month by exhibiting rarely-seen historic treasures from their collections at four host locations in the downtown area. 

Start off at any of the host locations --

• California State Archives (1020 O Street)
• California State Library (900 N Street)
• Center for Sacramento History (551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd.)
• Sacramento Public Library (828 I Street)

-- then "crawl" to the others using the map provided in your Archives Crawl passport. At each location, you can view archival collections on display and take behind-the-scenes tours. Representatives from other archives and special collections libraries will be on hand to discuss their archival collections - historic photographs, rare books, historic artifacts - and answer your questions about how to connect with local history resources. Those who have their passports stamped by at least three of the host locations will receive a set of limited-edition collectible coasters with images from Sacramento's former Buffalo Brewing Company.

 

Self-promotion: Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society, a sponsor of Family History Day, will have an exhibit at the California State Archives location.  Our Librarian, Sammie Hudgens, will be available to describe the extensive reference collections in our genealogical library housed at the State Archives.

Pamela Dallas, Speaker at Family History Day

Please welcome Pamela Dallas as a speaker at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

Pamela Dallas lectures nationally and locally on a wide range of topics, speaking frequently at genealogical society meetings, conferences and presenting full-day workshops. She is a professional researcher and a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Genealogical Speakers Bureau and several local societies. Pamela has served on the board of many societies. She played a key role in the success of the National Genealogical Society Conference held in Sacramento in 2004. Pamela has appeared on local television and radio talk shows to discuss genealogy and has written and appeared in several genealogy instructional videos aired on local TV. She believes the best part of genealogy is the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people.

Pamela Dallas will be presenting two classes:

Carved In Stone: Cemetery Research For Genealogy: Cemeteries are one of the most valuable resources in family history research. We will explore methods of locating cemeteries, preparing for the research trip, and ways of recording the information you find. Learn about burial registers, headstone inscriptions & symbols, plus much more during this fascinating presentation.

Remember the Ladies: Finding Your Female Ancestors:  Uncover the clues that will help you find your elusive female ancestors! Discovering the maiden name of your female ancestors can be frustrating and difficult. In this class, you will identify new ways to not only find her maiden name but learn about her as an individual.

Priscilla Alden Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century, Exhibitor at Family History Day

Please welcome the Priscilla Alden Chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

The Priscilla Alden Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century was organized in Sacramento in October 11, 1964 and chartered on March 6, 1965. The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century Headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.

The Objectives of the National Society are to:

• Aid in the preservation of the records and of the historic sites of our country
• Foster interest in historical colonial research
• Aid in the education of the youth of our country
• Commemorate the noble and heroic deeds of our ancestors, the founders of our great republic
• Maintain zealously those high principles of virtue, courage and patriotism which led to the independence of the Colonies and the foundation and establishment of the United States of America
• Aid in the establishment of a Library of Heraldry, working with various genealogical societies
• Develop a library specializing in seventeenth century American colonial data

Membership eligibility is open to any woman of good moral character, eighteen years of age or over, provided she has been invited by the Society and is the lineal descendant of an ancestor who lived and served prior to 1701 in one of the Original Colonies in the geographical area of the present United States of America.  Documentary proof of an ancestor's service prior to 1701 is required.

The Priscilla Alden Chapter meets at 11 a.m. on the second Thursday of September, December, February and April at Timbers at the Lodge Restaurant, 7050 Del Web Blvd., Sun City, Roseville, California. We have 54 members.

Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, Exhibitor at Family History Day

Please welcome the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery Archive is the repository of current and historical records of the cemetery and offers a wealth of information regarding those buried in the cemetery since 1849.  It serves as the research center for cemetery tour guides, genealogists, cemeteryhistorians, and families members seeking lost ancestors.

In addition to the Old City Cemetery maps, plot books, and burial index, the archive also includes burial indexes from other Sacramento County cemeteries, and a small but broad library of material pertaining to the early days of Sacramento and its residents.  See the website for archive hours.

The Old City Cemetery is the final resting place of people from all over the United States and the world, not just Sacramento natives.  The variety of names and places listed in the Archive burial index tells the story of the westward expansion, the Gold Rush, and even the California dream so many sought in the early to mid 1900's.

So if you are looking for an ancestor who disappeared from the family in Illinois, or Maine, or even Germany, drop by the Cemetery Archives.  You never know who you might find!

The Old City Cemetery Committee also hosts many events throughout the year.  Coming in October, join the "residents" of the Old City Cemetery as they share stories of their untimely death by murder, mayhem or the unusual. You may even be greeted by some lost souls. Bring your imaginations and a flashlight.

Sons of the American Revolution, Exhibitor at Family History Day

Please welcome the Sons of the American Revolution as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) are direct descendants of those patriots that achieved the independence of the American people. The objectives of our organization are intended to perpetuate a more profound reverence for the principles of the government founded by our forefathers.

The SAR is a historical, educational, and patriotic United States 501(c)3 non-profit organization that seeks to maintain and extend:

• the institutions of American freedom
• an appreciation for true patriotism
• a respect for our national symbols
• the value of American citizenship and
• the unifying force of e pluribus unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people

As a general rule, we meet the Third Friday evening of every month, September through June, at the Buggy Whip Restaurant Banquet Facilities, 2737 Fulton Avenue. Yolo County Archives, Exhibitor at Family History Day

 Please welcome the Yolo County Archives as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

The Yolo County Archives in Woodland, is the official repository for Yolo County government records since 1850. Research at the Archives is by appointment only (schedule below). Reference requests can be made over the phone or by email too!

Genealogy research resources available at the Yolo County Archives include over 32,000 alphabetized obituaries from Yolo County newspapers, Probates  and Wills (beginning in 1850), Naturalizations, and City/County directories. We also have a local history and genealogy reference book collection in the Archives, and more are available at the branches of the Yolo County Library. Other collections include photographs, property records, court cases and Board of Supervisor minutes.

In coordination with the Yolo County Library and the Friends of the Yolo County Archives, we also offer programs and exhibits about local history or genealogy.  Mark you calendar for these upcoming events in October hosted by the Yolo County Library system and of interest to genealogists.

• October 12 - Archivist Moira Conlan will present a program on “Preserving Your Family’s Treasures” at the Davis Public Library

National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Exhibitor at Family History Day

It is a pleasure to welcome the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as an exhibitor at Family History Day at the California State Archives.

When you join the DAR, you enter a network of more than 168,000 women in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally, who form lifelong bonds, honor their revolutionary ancestors and promote historic preservation, education and patriotism in their communities.  Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.

DAR members volunteer more than 60,000 hours annually to Veteran patients, award over $150,000 in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and support schools for the underprivileged with annual donations exceeding one million dollars. The DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's organization which is one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country.  DAR National Headquarters encompasses an entire downtown city block in Washington, DC, which houses one of the nation's premier genealogical libraries, Washington's largest concert hall, and an extensive collection of early American manuscripts and imprints.
